Chapter 20

Reading obituaries was not how Luke had planned to spend his day. He set his laptop on the couch between him and Amberlyn. “I say we give this a break until your office sends us the complete list of victims.”

She rolled her shoulders. “I could use a break.”

Taking the opening she’d given him, he stood. “Where do you want to go?” He held his hand up. “Anywhere but trying to run into my old classmates.”

“I’d say we could go for a walk, but I’d rather not have a second meeting with a rattlesnake in one day.” She closed her laptop. “Is there a shooting range around here?”

That wasn’t what he’d expected. “There used to be.” He unlocked his phone and did a quick search. “Yep. It’s still there.”

“Are you up for some target practice?” Amberlyn asked.

“I would be, but I didn’t bring a gun with me.”

“You can use my backup.”

He lifted his eyebrows. “You brought two guns with you?”

“I was coming to an unfamiliar area more than two hours from the closest FBI office. Of course I brought a spare.” She stood. “I’m surprised you didn’t bring a weapon. You knew what we’d be walking into.”

Luke pushed to his feet and shrugged. “I’m not authorized to carry on military bases or at the White House, so I didn’t even think of it.”

“You do know how to shoot, though, right?”

Luke cocked an eyebrow. “I’m a Marine.”

She shook her head. “How could I forget?” With her laptop in hand, she headed for her bedroom. “I’ll be right back.”

Luke secured his laptop in his room and grabbed his shoes. When he returned to the living room, Amberlyn was waiting for him with her purse over her shoulder and a gun case in her hand.

“Maybe we should grab some lunch while we’re out.” Amberlyn gave him a pointed look. “Since someone finished off the enchiladas for breakfast.”

“Don’t give me that look. You had some too.”

“Only because I knew they’d be gone by lunchtime,” Amberlyn said. “And after the rattlesnake incident, I needed comfort food.”

“My enchiladas rank among your comfort foods?” He kind of liked that.

“They are pretty good.” She shrugged. “Anyway, I doubt we’ll have much time today for either of us to spend preparing food.”

She was right. As soon as her office sent her the complete list of victims, she would undoubtedly want them to search for connections to the bombers and possibly someone in town beyond Kyle Moran.

“How about we order something for takeout after we finish at the shooting range?” Luke opened the door. “That way, we don’t have to cook, and we also won’t have to sit through a meal with people watching us eat.”

“Sounds like a fair compromise.” Amberlyn walked outside.

He locked the door behind him and did a quick check underneath the vehicle and beneath the hood. The possibility of someone planting a car bomb was highly unlikely, but after their recent string of incidents, he wasn’t taking any chances.

As soon as they were both settled in the car, he opened the security app on his phone to turn on the motion-sensor alarm.
